And The Spin Doctors Spin...

(These are probably old headlines to you, but I've been swamped with work. So, I'm trying to play some catch-up.)

Obama's remarks gives Clinton an opening

What Senator Obama said privately at a fundraiser in San Francisco last Sunday. He was trying to explain his troubles winning over some working-class voters, saying they have become frustrated with economic conditions:

"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Which is fucking true.

And his response:

"There has been a small "political flare-up because I said something that everybody knows is true, which is that there are a whole bunch of folks in small towns in Pennsylvania, in towns right here in Indiana, in my hometown in Illinois, who are bitter. They are angry. They feel like they have been left behind. They feel like nobody is paying attention to what they're going through.

"So I said, well you know, when you're bitter you turn to what you can count on. So people, they vote about guns, or they take comfort from their faith and their family and their community. And they get mad about illegal immigrants who are coming over to this country."

So, of course Hillary Clinton and John McCain are spinning, misconstruing what he said. Which to me, is truly insulting to the folks that Obama is referring to anyway. Clinton and McCain's camps are counting on the herd hearing what they say that Obama really meant and braying all the way to their own slaughterhouse.

Typical.

I actually thought that Senator Clinton had enough of her own merit to run on. But, it no longer seems that way...

Even though I'm an Obama girl, I respected Hillary. Senator Clinton has greatly disappointed me with her bad form and her penchant for chewing down trees and building dams and flooding property.

Whether or not you agree with me, if you'd like to send a message to the Clinton campaign to tell them how you think they're doing (whether good or bad) you may do so here.

That's it, baby...Stay strong...And don't forget to call me.

Sorry Kevin. As much as I love you, I have to disagree. I live in and around those small towns - and people clinging to religion and guns around here.

And yes, people are bitter. But for lots of reasons. In my dh small town family (all Southern Baptist) clinging to religion is history, family, and tradition. Guns are used for hunting - another "proud" tradition - as are bows, fishing reels, etc.

I think he screw up - big time. Truly. Screwed. Up.

While I understand a more metropolitan mentality (being from a larger place), which believes the statement he made is true, it's the small towns that vote, send their children to war, and pay their taxes. His statement, and his follow up, make him look out of touch with the common man.

What does he know about sending a child to war? What does he know about the comfort of tradition and religion? What does he know about being out of work? hungry? shopping at Walmart? Nothing.

His statement is the kind of thing that can bite him on election day. And that's really really sad.

He screwed this pooch himself.

Ummm...what does John McCain or Hillary Clinton know about...

"...sending a child to war? What does he know about the comfort of tradition and religion? What does he know about being out of work? hungry? shopping at Walmart?"

There are no "just folks" in this election. Every single one of them is an elitist that is out of touch with the common man. To see Clinton slobbering at the mouth over this statement and then drinking beer and doing shots is so patronizing and ridiculous.

This whole election has me sick to my stomach.

I think Sen Obama was using guns and religion as a metaphor for right wing ideals, not the actual tangential items. Right wingers love fear. And if you start talking about removing anti-immigration laws, they circle the wagons around all off their favorites... pro-life, guns, nazis, etc.

I fully agree! I was almost there with Hillary, but her large personal agenda has overtaken her politics.

I'm back on Obama's team.
