The Deadliest Item at Your Grocery Store

"Somewhere in the northern Pacific floats a non-biodegradable petrochemical blob that's TWICE THE SIZE OF TEXAS. Much of this deadly mess originated when someone innocently took home their shopping in a plastic bag.

In the U.S. alone, we throw away 100 billion plastic bags each year -- the equivalent of 12 million barrels of oil."

Will and I have REALLY been trying to remember to keep our canvas bags in our cars and to not just use them at the grocery store, but also at Target, the hardware store, the porn shop, etc.

If you'd like to find out more about what you can do to help, you may do that here.

After all, remember, we're not just sharing the world with her,

but with her too.

Hmm, talking about non-biodegradable piles of plastic.
We've got a bunch of canvas bags hanging in the garage, too often I forget them until hitting the store checkout line.

Have you seen the new bags people are crocheting out of recycled plastic bags? They're pretty cool. I found some on Etsy.

Okay, on a totally different subject, I'm going to start my campaign now. You MUST come to BlogHer next year. You'll be a rock star!!! This is just my first nudge. As time gets closer I will start the petition--don't you worry.

What I want to know is....who decided these plastic bags were a good idea? Certainly not the consumer. They hold have the amount of groceries, they cut off the circulation in your fingers, they cause bread to be squished, and half the time, they have to be doubled in order to hold anything heavier than a loaf of bread. The other day when I went grocery shopping, I found a jar of pickles, a container of peanut butter and bottle of fabric softener each in their own bag. WTF??

My grocery store doesn't even offer paper bags anymore. I know, I know, I should switch, but here in suburban hell, the closest one wins.

Great PSA

I always ask for paper, but canvas would be better.

I am so signing Mama's BlogHer petition ... I plan on going next year.

Susan and I are always doing the same thing...trying to remember the canvas bags. Trader Joes has a lottery for free groceries if you use your own bags, but we haven't won yet. I love envirosax - google them if you have a chance. They are cool.

Some places have banned the use of these, right? I heard about this on the news. My mom and I always recycle our plastic bags, but I wonder just what solution we, as a people, will come up with as a solid and consistent alternative.

You'll appreciate my project. I cut up all of my plastic bags into strips, tied them together and wound them into little yarn balls and knitted big shopping bags out of all of the little ones

I have a bunch of Trader Joes canvas bags that I use no matter where I am shopping. One grocery store (that wasn't Trader Joes) actually gave me a hard time because they said "Trader Joes" on them. I thought the guy wasnt going to bag my groceries!! I get some plastic to use for our trash on our beach days. Our beaches are "carry in, carry out" beaches. No trashcans in sight.

The worst thing is that you can't recycle the buggers. Grrr...

Of course the most environmentally expensive thing a person can do is have a child - but we won't go there....

Oh we are SO all about the tote bags...

I know Maui has banned plastic bags as well as San Francisco... I wish Laguna Beach would follow suit!

What I don't understand is why our country is allowing these things to be used at all. Why can't we just say "no" to all the non-recyclable crap, the styrofoam, the toxic toys, the hazardous baby bottles and everything else? It should be illegal.

We do our part, and I think I'm making a difference not getting bags for small stuff and using the canvas bags I bought at the grocery store, but then, picking up some more school clothes for the boys at The Children's Place and the freaking bag says "made in Vietnam" and smells like it will give us all a disease! What the heck are we supposed to do? Anyone?

Yep, used my canvas Trader Joe's bags and my IKEA bag at the Ralphs last night. Only ended up needing one paper bag. AND, Ralphs gives me a nickel off every bag I don't have to use.
